Growing Up Digital

Please respond to the article "Growing Up Digital", which we read in class.  Do you think your brain is being rewired?  Do you think too much technology is hurting your learning?  What are your thoughts about this article?

  1. i belive alot of people are growing up defrentily then they did back then. although i do not have a phone i do go on facebook alot. and i also always go online in call of duty.i belive that this and future generations will lack social skills because theynever have to talk face to FACE.

  2. no i do not think that our brains are being rewired

  3. I thought the article was interesting! :)
Our brains work differently now because of too much technology. We want something, and we want it NOW! We never have patience to wait for something now because everything is there instantly for us! Our brains are not rewired though.

  4. All of the technology is making us way too lazy and impatient. If things don't work right the second we want them to, we get upset and give up with it. We're are also getting too involved with technology. We can't even focus on our homework anymore without having our cell phones or a computer right next to us. Obviously the article proved that our brains cannot handle that kind of multitasking. Our brains definitely need to be rewired if we want a successful future for this world!:)

  5. When I said our brains needed to be rewired...I meant rewired in the opposite direction of technology. Sorry, just wanted to clear that up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think people should stop texting while doing their homework

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think that yes are brains are being rewired but I also say no. I agree yes because while doing our homework we text, while we're inside there are people outside playing and hanging around but instead we decide to watch t.v. i also say no because watching t.v. or texting while doing home work is our choice. we can let it affect us or not but 1 thing we can do is control how much we text or play on facebook or anything we do involving electronics. and btw this is Alex Gall bc this thing wont let me fix it!

  8. No, I don't think our brains are being rewired, and I also think that, just like Nina said, we are too lazy. If we spend a little more time doing homework than going on the computer or our phones to play games, chat, or text, we could use technology more wisely for our benefit.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah, I agree, Emily. 10-15 years ago, it was rare to even see an adult with their own cell phone or computer. Now EVERYONE has one!! I even see 5 year olds with phones some times! What does a 5 year old even do with a phone, some barely know how to write their name. I was shocked when the article said the 14 year old sent 27,000 texts in one month!!! That's CRAZY!! We all need to learn how to limit ourselves more.

  10. I'm just saying, I got my first phone when I was 7, so yeah, my life for 5-6 years has been different from texting ;D.

Yeah, I'm so re-wired! Just joshin'!

    ReplyDelete
  11. But, just to point out, technology can teach us stuff too! Everyone is forgetting the advantages of technology because the article told us only the disadvantages!

(Ooo! Look at me using all these big words!) :D

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well I think that yes, our brains are being rewired. Like how we think is different than people 20 years ago. Maybe 21st century kids would be doing our homework and think,"Oh. I should go on a computer to find that answer." Maybe kids of the 20th or 19th century would be doing their homework and think,"I remember that answer. We memorized it last week." We learn differently now than back then, and one of the causes is technology, which could be good or bad.

  13. there are two sides tothis article but mostly yes because were are exposed to this new technology by areselfes and others aruond us on the other side the technology can help in ways too like this blog thing people a long tile ago didnt have computers do this kind of stuff to help us talk to one another on this blog site but over all i liked the article.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Kyle, I agree with you: there are two faces to this article. I think some people spend tons of time on their phones, Facebook, etc. And, the 14 year old with 27,000 texts is an example of that. I think that kid was an example that was more on the extreme side, because not all of us are like that. But, on the other hand, technology is good in so many ways and our lives are improving, too. After all, what is wrong with more access to information?
Actually, I think this article relates to the blogging idea. As kids growing up in the technology age, we need to know how to do stuff like blogging, because our jobs will involve things like blogging. We need the exposure to technology.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that technology is not a bad thing unless miss used...Going on to do facebook and stuff isn't bad unless you are on the computer non-stop. So I think that just because were growing up with it isn't bad if were not obsessing over it like some people.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, I agree Lucy! Now that technology is a part of our lives, it's not going any where. By the time we graduate and start our careers, everything we do will be on computers or something technology because who knows what else they'll come out with. But the article did only focus on the disadvantages, Bailey! (:

  17. I do believe our brains our being rewired from to much technology. I believe technoloy is huting the ways people learn and is effecting the ability to study and mantain focas on a task

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think the technology is making us lazy just like what Nina said. I think soon it's going to be like wall-e and we're not going to have to walk and we're going to become fat! There's new things of technology like everyday! It's crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  19. i think that technology is making a big difference , beacause nobody is learning anything.beacause of the technology

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think too many people are growing up with all of this technology. No one answers calls anymore. It's always texting now. The technology is making such a big difference now.

    ReplyDelete
  21. no i don't think so.yes it might be interfearing with our learning.i think we need to stay away from technology ror a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  22. i think technology isnt bad for our brains. unless like people are miss useing it like texting a friend during a teast to get answers for a test. so no i do not think technology has rewired our brains

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that yes are brains are being rewired. I think also that teachers can use that to there advantage like what ms. waple is doing with the blog. And Mrs. Waple the official count of my brothers texting last month was 120,682. That is really bad isnt it?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes I do think our brains and being rewired. If you think about all the technology we have.and it's sad because we really have the inability to do things without technology

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think that alot of people text to much sometimes they even text in school , i think thats bad but i domt think our brains are being rewired but i think 27000 texts is alittle over board,

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sorry to go off topic, but is there any way you coul print my essay if i email it to you, Ms. Waple??

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can print it Nina if you email it to me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. the article was good i think we use our phones and computers alot and it could be a little much but it is not rewireing our brains

    ReplyDelete
  29. We use our phone's and computers way to much! I text when I'm reading and when I do my homework which is bad. So I can focus more I'm gonna have my sister hide my phone! I'm going to do that for like a month. Do you think it would make a difference to my learning?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Cassie...I swear I've always said we are going to turn out like Wall-E since the day that movie came out!!! :D It's true, though. But i think that if your sis hides your phone then it will definitely help. Oh, and Carly, I thought that 27,000 texts a month was crazy, but 120,682 is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! How can you even think about sending that many texts!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think it can hurt and help us because it gives us a more fun way to learn but it can also distract us.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Justin. Technology helps us with report and homework (as im doing now) but it can also distract you. Like if you are doing a report so you just copy and paste so when you take a test you wont know anyof it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think that too much technology can be bad because like brought out in the article, the students, when on the internet, are used to tabbing back and forth on pages, and that can create a short attention span. But, I also can see the point of view from the people who think that technology is good because we are growing up in a time where technology is everything, and I think that as time goes on technology is just going to progress and become more important. So, I guess I would have to say that too much technology can be hurtful, but in the long run we will need to have some experiences with technology!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't think our brains are being rewired but to much technology is bad for you. If your using technology to much it might hurt your learning ability in the long run.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I liked what Alex D said in class about how we are more knowledgeable, but less smart because of the technology we have today. I've always thought the same thing. With all of the technology we have, we get lazier because most of the technology does our work for us. Technology is great to have, but we should not overuse it. People in my opinion are becoming less smart when using tools like a calculator, texting, and the internet. We can forget easily that people before our generation have had to figure out work without these resources.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i dont think our brains r being rewired but i think it can hurt your learning cuz it can reallly distract u a lot it was a pretty good article i liked the part about the 27000 txts lol

    ReplyDelete
  37. i think that to much technology is bad for us because it can virtually kill us or hurt our health. jake bissell out and i like turtles!!!!!!!!!!!!@@@@@@@@@@@@###########

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think that our brains are not being rewired but we do react differently to things with technology progressing. The factor that we want more and we are texting and listening to music all the time (including when we do work) may have a impact on the way we learn. Although we may be taking advantage of technology. We could be using it in a better way to help us in our learning better.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that we should use technology but maybe cut down on non-essential use of technology. I do think maybe all the technology we are using today is somewhat re-wiring our brains.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't think our brains are being rewired but every time i think of video games i forget something.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think that it's good that we are growing up digital. It can be very helpful with our school work, and homework. It also can help with saving time. I think that growing up digital is going to help us years later.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jake Bissel out? Nice Jake ... ;P

Anyways, technology is really making me frusterated lately, and it shouldn't. Like when my computer doesn't do what I clicked on, I get frusterated with it....I kinda yell at it like it can understand me...(Ask Nina!! I get so angry at it.) but computers can't do every single thing you ask it to all the time ; they're not perfect. So I'll try and remember that when I'm screaming at my computer to load.(:

    Bailey out! (T-hee!)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well obviously we are different than our parents, but idk if its necissarily bad or good bcuz its more convenient for us but sometimes its distracting from whats really important, like homework. you just have to learn moderation- like, for exp. when i read i compromise by reading a page or two, read a text and reply. page or two of the book, text and reply, and so on.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree with Nick! It can help us but it distracts us a lot... I haven't hid my phone yet.. thanks for commenting on my question Nina!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that technology has rewired our brains. All the points in the article are very valid and are true. But it has also improved our learning. If young people have more self restrain when using technology (like not texting while doing homework and not texting in school) then we can use technology to its fullest potential. there are so many new ways to learn thanks to technology (like this blog). it excites the students and holds there attention longer then just reading out of a text book.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think technology has rewired our brains. It can effect the way we learn.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think we depend on tecnology more than we need to but we are not being rewired

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh Bailey! You dint just gyell at it, you physically get mad at it and shake it! Lol!!! It's hilarious watching you get like that!

    ReplyDelete
  49. no i dont think we are being rewired atleast not me

    ReplyDelete
  50. I am glad this article got everyone thinking about how they use technology. There is no sides to this discussion, because technology is not all good or all bad. We have learned so much through technology and can stay connected to one another more than ever. I just wanted you to think if technology ever interferes with your learning. When you look something up are you really learning about it or just finding an answer to a question or problem? Does the information get deposited into your long term memory, or just stays long enough for you to complete your assignment? Again there is no right or wrong answer, because the answer can change depending on what you are learning or where your interest lie. As for texting, I love it too, but it can be distracting especially when doing homework or any type of work (like grading papers...lol). All of you have great comments and view points. Keep your voices heard by continuing to blog.

BTW Carly that amount of texting is crazy!!!! Wow I can't even imagine texting that much my fingers and thumbs would be cramping up.

Bailey I think we would work great together because I feel the same way about when technology doesn't work. Nothing frustrates me more than spending triple the amount of time on something that should take minutes just because of technology not working.

  51. This article is about 16 & 18 year olds. We are younger and really different than them

  53. I think our brains are being rewired because we use technology for almost everything we do in our daily lives. I think it is hurting us because we sometimes while were doing school work we text and get distracted and not learning. Other times i think technology is really good because it makes life easier and more social. I thought the article was really interesting, but i think they didn't put anything that's good about technology.

  55. I agree with Abby that it's not bad but some people do miss use it and also some times it can be dangerous like in cars if you get distracted and lose focus it could have a terrible outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Kids are wired too them some know how to handle it some dont some kids cant put'em down and do their homework. Some bully others through text messaging. Some adults or any one driving could easily get ditracted and hit a tree, another car (ect.) so they are driving hazards.~Cory Schultz

  57. i think that if ppl took in the info and not just for facts it would. Now there is more knowledge but ppl less smart

    ReplyDelete
  58. i think this artical is sad, and shocking. If this is how kids are now with learning. Kids in the future are going to be preatty stupid. Not to be rude or any thing , they just wont have the knowledge in the future to get through every day life ( at a school or at a work, if they get one.

    ReplyDelete
  59. no i do not think our brains are being rewired

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think they are because some can limit themselves but others can't

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think children of the 21st century's brains are being rewired due to too much technology. I don't think technology should be completely restricted, but we shouldn't have too much, either. When it comes to learning purposes, technology is great!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I found this artical interesting. I agree with the things they are saying. Grades are droping because of technology, but they are also improving. Technology can help us improve by tying, people can learn from spelling errors and puncuation. ect. Technology is helpful!

    ReplyDelete
  63. yes and no, technology can be helpful, but sometimes distracting.

    ReplyDelete
  64. i agree with kathleen wegrecki! It is often times helpful, but too distracting, it makes us all have a lazy side. The more attention we pay to technology the more focus we r loosing on school work and etc

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think that technology is making the people to dependent on it. While it is also useful. For example, most kids go on facebook or use their phones instead of doing things like homework. On the other hand we used ALOT of technology to clean up the oil spill in the gulf but at the same time it was technology that caused the oil spill in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think that technology is important to our society. If we just do our work first then we won't get sidetracked anyways!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think if we look something up on the computer we aren't learning anything. People don't read through the info, they usually just skim through it to find their answer.

    ReplyDelete
  68. i think if we use technology to learn it will be easier to remember because were always using technology so it will just help us.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Technology is so useful how it helps our lives but it has many downsides to get people driven to it all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Brooke T. says... Technology is helping us learn better but there are some disadvantages about it. It's an easier way to learn but it doesn't make your brain work as hard as it should be like when our parents were kids. Although it's not the best, technology is good to have.

    ReplyDelete
  71. it is good because u can find work on the computer

    ReplyDelete
  72. Its good and its bad. its bad because if you spend all your time on the computer, you will probaly get bad grades in school. its good because some things arent in books so you have the internet to look on. i dont think my brain is being rewired:D

  73. Whose post is the long number with no name? I need to know in order for this person to get credit. If I don't know in a couple days then I will take the comment down.

    Keep your comments coming!

    ReplyDelete
  74. we are and were not at the same time being rewired

    ReplyDelete
  75. on the subject of our brains being rewired, there are two, or more sides to the arguement,as shown by the above comments.
i think that yes our brains are being brought up in a different manner than our parents. they cant be rewired because they were never in any other way. also, instananous knowlege at our fingertips may be enabling our brain to use more than 10% thinking power.

  76. I think it depends on your perspective!

    ReplyDelete
  77. i think that u should stop texting will in school

    ReplyDelete
  78. I think that technology has changed our minds alot. Tv cell phones and everything has us more focused on technology than real life

    ReplyDelete
  79. I don't think our brains are being rewired because we use technology in education as well! We use it when watching video clips with our projectors and when we blog!! I do think we use it a little too much and should limit ourselves more. :D

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think our brains ain't being rewired because we always used technology, but now its just a lot more cooler and the older people are getting jealous....But we do have a lot more people just sitting around then we did 10 years ago and doing nothing because of this technology. Plus we use technology everywhere, even in school.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think that ppl r less smart eventhough there is more knowledge to gain

    ReplyDelete
  82. it depends on what your use technology for

    ReplyDelete
  83. Are brains aren't being rewired, but we could use our modern technology less. For an example, sometimes we use our computers to do research when we could just use our textbooks. Still, it's useful when you really do need it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think it has a very big impact on young peoples lives.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I think it has a huge impact on young peoples lives

    ReplyDelete
  86. I never really thought of it like Caitlyn S. said it, but she makes a really good point. I don't really think of that kind of technology when I think of technology. But she's right. We wouldn't be able to make as big of a difference in the world without it.

    ReplyDelete
  87. technology is making us waaay too lazy. it is a good thng that technology is advancing, but i dont think its in a good way. i think, in my opinion, the only technology that is truly making a better difference for society, is technology for school. like calculators and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I think this is a good idea because if you forget your textbook, or forget how to do something then you can use the internet as a way to find it out.

    ReplyDelete
  89. no i dont think think they are being rewired

    ReplyDelete
  90. i think good and bad about this i think good beacuse we need to learn and i think bad beacuase we havr to much information in our heads right now

    ReplyDelete
  91. I don't think it is affecting my learning, becasue I text and go on facebook probably as much as them and I have good grades,I think it just depends on if you pay attention in class.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I'm sorry Hunter, but I'm disagreeing with you. When we go on the computer most people get distracted. My sister said she'll be going on the computer to do homework and I walk over to her and she's on Facebook! Also people usually don't read the article or they will go on Google or go to Wikianswers.com. I think people try to find the answer as easily as possible instead of looking it up in different places like books, encyclopedias, and some reliable websites. Most people take the answer they 1st see even if it's wrong, so we're learning the wrong thing or we're not really learning at all.

    ReplyDelete
  93. nice one Cassie :D
I get VERRRRRRRY distracted on the computer (:

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't think our brains are being rewired. But i do think that people are going a little overboard with the technology. Because kids are texting and like on the computer instead of doing school work . So it's good and bad.

    ReplyDelete
  95. ok well our brains are not getting rewired? its alright if we have electonics. but not while doing school work.

    ReplyDelete
  96. no just because we use alot of technogy doesn't mean our brains are rewired

    ReplyDelete
  97. technology is making us lazy. sometimes we dont do our work because were to busy on the computer, or our phones! we dont pay any attention to whats happening around us because were to busy with technology! i think we should limit how much we use it

    -maddie towers

    ReplyDelete
  98. I dont think just because we use technology doesnt mean that are brains are being rewired

    ReplyDelete
  99. I think that technology is hurting our minds because we depend more on it.

    ReplyDelete
  100. i think that technology is hurting us but also it is helping us. it is hurting us becuase we depened on it. for instance i could not live with out my phone or computer. It is helping us becuase in some ways we are smarter since we know how to use it and all the little things about it.

    ReplyDelete
  101. know this is late but i like the new technology it has some advances and disadvantages one reason is cyber bulleying and hackers. our new technology is extremely expensive which at the time our economey is going in to a great depression some of my favorite thing in technology has to be how our phones can work
we also are very into our phones expesially facebook. i was reading a book on spies and thier was an article on how lazy we are becoming.

    ReplyDelete
  102. All the tech aint rewireing is, but it is making us alot lazying and that is why is america the most obeese nation

    ReplyDelete
  103. Time magazine had a related article a few weeks ago. It described how in the next 40 years machines and computers will surpass human beings in terms of knowledge and intellegence. If you have ever seen the movie "Terminator" we may be heading that direction. As we use more and more technology, more and more technology will be invented to keep up with our needs and eventually technology will be created simply to try and keep up with this demand and computers will be made that can anticipate what humans will want and will be able to produce them on their own...kind of scary!

    ReplyDelete
  104. The only way i think it's really helping us is if we need our cell phones. Like if we needed to call 911. The one thing i hate about cell phones that they aren't very big so a lot of people text during school and that's distracting us from learning because we might be focused on our conversation more then what we're learning about.
